The following are the suggested mechanics of the promotion. If you wish to alter these to suit your venue, please outline your suggested changes in your promo proposal brief.

State of Origin is a yearly Rugby League Challenge with a long standing history and tradition of interstate rivalry. It is known for its toughness and is one of the best and most watch football games in the country. Traditionally SOO is watch with mates and this 'group appeal' gives you the opportunity to encourage these groups of friends to your hotel for the game. The challenge is to give them an experience they could not get by watching the game at home.

Please choose from the below options for your State of Origin activity. Please note the relevant activity cost to your venue and choose wisely on what you see generating the best return for dollar spent. You will need to identify which of the below activities you would like to run in your promo proposal to be added to the OMG asap.

1. $9 VB JUG (Cost Circa $400)
Offered throughout the game from Kick off until final siren, $9 VB Jugs is an offer created to encourage group participation. It is expected that this promo will cost you around $400 per game to make sure your GP isn't jeopardised. You will need to ensure you have jugs available through your Fosters Rep (also speak to your rep about 5 + 1 deals on VB & Carlton Draught).

2. State of Origin Jersey Giveaway (Cost $100)
State of Origin Jersey Giveaway will be run in the lead up to game one. Purchase a schooner of VB to go into the draw to win. Drawn at half time of game one. You will need promotional entry tickets, SOO Jersey (state of your choice), entry box. Please note that the purchase of Jerseys are through VS

3. $9 Schnitty: (Cost Circa $150)
$9 Chicken Schnitzel is a reduced price offering on a traditional sporty pub meal. The price difference to your regular menu price on chicken schnitzel will need to be allocated to your food promo account. You will need to ensure that staff are aware of how to allocate this amount to promo and charge the $9 to customers. This promotion will run during the dinner period on each of the game days.

4. First Try Scorer Sweep (Cost $100)
Ordered through Sport Sweep Aust and Run on each game day, patrons will go into the draw for first try scorer. You will need to allocate a raffle ticket number to each player from each side. Post the player draw with corresponding raffle ticket numbers. Patrons will be given the chance to draw a raffle ticket and if the first try scorer corresponds with their ticket number they will win 20 Schooners of VB. This will be run for the first 26 patrons to purchase a schooner on game night.

5. "We Love Hookers" TAB (Cost $100)
Yes a controversial name- Run through your TAB, the Venue Manager will need place $50 bet on each of the NSW and QLD Hookers for LAST try scorer. If one of the Hooker's scores the LAST try, you will shout the bar with the winnings. You will need to place this bet on game day hoping for the best odds. Please clearly record this on your DTS under 'SOO Hookers Promo'.

6. Promo Staff (Cost $350)
2 x Promo staff to assist with promotion and atmosphere at your venue during all State of Origin Matches. Promo staff can be used for a variety of tasks including table service, assisting with additional activity listed above, taking photos and just mingling with patrons. Staff should be given a clear brief prior to the commencement of their shift to ensure you are getting the most out of their time.

7. VENUEs Other Suggestions
If there is any other activity you would like to include in your State of Origin activity, please clearly outline this in your promo proposal, including all associated costs.

Suggested marketing initiatives are outlined below. Not all will be appropriate to your venue, however please suggest as many options as you feel appropriate in you promotion proposal.

  • Create as much chatter in the lead up to the Origin series as possible. Ensure staff are constantly creating banter with locals and particularly those in the Footy Tipping comp.
  • Create a Origin Power wall in your bar with Jerseys, Balloons, Streamers, POS and other Theming Ideas.
  • Ensure you create as much activity during origin games as possible. You need to give patrons an experience they can not get at home. Have staff in state colours, face paint, ribbons etc to increase excitement and banter with the locals
  • Create staff incentives around Origin Theming and wearing their teams colours
  • Have well planned activities in the lead up to the game to build excitement and activity on the day.
  • Consider how you can extend patrons stay after the game has finished by improving atmosphere and ambience leading up to the game, throughout the game and after the game. Consider things like room theming, seating arrangements, lighting, post game music selection, games/activities/draws etc
  • Ensure sporting sponsors 'buy in' by arranging fundraising initiatives for the games. You can also entice them to your venue by offering a potent food and beverage special and reserved seating area.
  • Ensure you have enough seating for patrons to watch the game with friends. Encourage group participation.
  • For non food venues, you may wish to consider a spit or BBQ that sporting sponsors can run for a gold coin donation to raise funds and ensure buy in.
