2016 NRL TIPPING COMPETITION

OVERVIEW OF THE PROMOTION:

Footy tipping competitions are a great way to engage your NRL customers throughout the NRL season. The objective of this activity is to:

  • Increase the frequency in which these customers visit your venue.
  • Establish your venue as their preferred place to watch NRL games.
  • Capture customer data from an important segment of your customer base, valuable as a marketing channel for other promotional activity.

The 2016 NRL season begins on Thursday 3rd March, with 26 rounds plus finals.

In 2016, we will refine our competition mechanics to suit the preferences of our cusÍtomers and provide them with ongoing rewards for their continued patronage.

Venues will have the choice to select from 3 tipping comp format, which include an APP-based iPad digital program (My Tipping), NRL's official online tipping competition & Aussiesports traditional paper card format. Each format has both operational & customer usage Pro’s & Con’s, which should all be considered when selecting which format is right for your venue. If you are unsure, please speak with your customers, your venue teams and your Area managers for guidance.

BASE TIPPING COMPETITION:
DETAILS: The 2016 NRL tipping competition comprises of 26 rounds where by entrants tip the winners of the weekly games.

Scores are tallied each week and added to the scoreboard with running totals. Entrants with the highest scores will win the prize amount associated with their prize.

The fee paid to enter the competition directly accounts for the prize pool. Usually the prize pool is divided proportionately for a 1st, 2nd & 3rd place.

GENERAL RULES:

  1. Eligibility:
    1.1. All entrants must be 18 years +.
    1.2. Staff are permitted to enter the competition, however issue of prizes are subject to Redcape staff policies.

  2. Registration & Entry Fee Payment:
    2.1. Entrants must provide their First & last names, contact phone & email address to register for the competition (Exceptions can be made for customers without either a mobile or email address).
    2.2. Entrants must pay the confirmed entry fee by the 2nd round of the competition. If payment has not been received, the entrant will be disqualified.

  3. Prize Pool:
    3.1. The prize pool amount & subsequent placing prizes will be announced during the 2nd round of the competition.

  4. Points:
    4.1. Correct tip: 1 point
    4.2. Incorrect tip: 0 points
    4.3. Match drawn (but not tipped): 0 points
    4.4. Match drawn (and tipped): 1 point
    4.5. Full round: 1 point
    4.6. Bonus rounds may feature within the competition. (Venues may wish to revise the points system, but this must be featured in your proposal).

  5. Submitting Tips:
    5.1. Tips must be submitted by kick-off of the first game of the round.
    5.2. If you forget to submit your tips for a week, all Away teams are selected for you

  6. Prize Payments:
    6.1. Prize payments will be made to customers in cash after the 26th round.

MyTipping iPAD
MyTipping is an App-based tipping competition that can be run through your venues using an ipad. The benefits of this system is the ease of managing the competition, you can dictate the point scoring system of your competition and is user friendly.
This system will cost $450 for software and the additional $750 for and ipad if your venue does not have an existing.

AUSSIESPORTS (manual)
For some venues, a traditional format may be the preferred option for your customer base who may be less technologically savvy. The downside to this system is that there is room for error in scoring and may heighten risk of customer concerns to cheating etc. If your venue has had issues with alleged mis-management in the past, then this would not be the best format for your venue.

NRL ONLINE TIPPING COMPETITION
If you wish to keep your competition digital, but cannot warrant the cost of Mytipping software and/or the ipad, you may wish to create an online private competition through NRL https://tipping.nrl.com/help/index.html#/rules. Please note that this has the pros from a cost- perspecti ve, howe ver the cons include the fact that the entrants can place tips remotely and it will be harder to manage sign ups and payments with such a competition. The rules and scoring may also differ.

GETTING READY:
Please include ALL of the below detail in your proposal.

  1. Set an entry fee between $10 - $30.

  2. Confirm your target of entrant numbers – as recommended below. If you wish to stipulate a different target number, please explain your resoning in your proposal.

  3. Stipulate your Prize Pool Split:
    3.1. Prize pool division must be clearly stipulated: E.g. 1st = 70%; 2nd = 20%; 3rd = 10%
    3.2. Include date that the prize will be awarded.

  4. Collect entrants’ details. You will be required to get every member to complete a membership form (provided by VS), which will include:
    4.1. Full name
    4.2. Mobile
    4.3. Email
    4.4. Birth Date
    4.5. Payment Confirmation
    4.6. Tipster Card Number.
    You must collect these forms, enter details to the spreadsheet provided by VS, then send ALL original forms to Venue Support for data entry.

  5. Create your terms & conditions:
    5.1. Competition T&Cs must be clearly outlined to members & available for customers to view upon request. Please see Jenny Smith if you require assistance creating these for your venue.

  6. Bank your Prize Money:
    6.1. Must be banked daily – Mention on the DTS as tipping comp funds and coded to holding account 1027-01
    6.2. Accounts will leave funds in a clearing account until end of season.
    6.3. You will be able request final total from your accounts contact to notify members of the prize pool.

PUBLICAN CASH CONTRIBUTIONS:
DETAILS: To ensure that your tipping competitions are more attractive than ever, you will be given the opportunity to contribute a substantial “guaranteed” amount to start your competition’s prize pool.

This will be a big focus of your preliminary marketing when encouraging your customers to sign up - as a gift directly from the venue’s publican.

Your venue has been approved for the following cash contributions, which will be a direct A&M expense.

PERFECT ROUNDS:
DETAILS: Offering small spot prizes for perfect rounds can keep up participation and banter in your tipping competition, particularly when interest is at risk of dropping off in the second half of the season.

It gives those that are performing poorly overall a chance to win.

Consider offering the following items as perfect round prizes:

  1. Free VB Jug
  2. $20 Bunnings Gift Voucher
  3. Off-premise alcohol (CUB only)

It is important to ensure that perfect round prizes are only available for normal rounds, not bye or reps rounds. This must be clearly stated in your terms and conditions.

LAST MAN STANDING:
DETAILS: Throughout the tipping season, there is risk that some customers may lose interest. Adding supplementary competitions or short term prizes can keep up the momentum, as they add another opportunity for tipsters to win.

The last man standing competition essentially runs independent of the base NRL tipping competition.

Mechanics:

  1. The concept is that entrants pay an additional fee, say $5 - $20, to enter this competition, which makes up the final prize pool.
  2. Each week, entrants only need to nominate one team which they feel will win.
  3. If their nominated team wins, they proceed to the next round. If their team loses, they are out of the competition.
  4. The last entrant left wins the entire prize pool.
  5. In the event of there being multiple winners left, the prize pool is split between the remaining.

You will be required to manage the registration & monies involved in this competition in the same manner as the base competition.

In your proposal, include:

  1. The entry fee you will be charging
  2. Whether you require an additional scoreboard for this activity.

COST TO A&M:
Nil for QLD venues as you will receive a kit within your tipping competition kit from Aussie Sports
NSW venues: You will require a board to be designed through the OMG for approximately $80.

LAUNCH PARTY:
DETAILS: Hosting a NRL tipping comp member party will be an instant reward for your members and is a great opportunity to demonstrate why your venue should be their preferred venue to watch NRL games.

This launch party should be held on the first day of the competition, and will be the last opportunity that members have to put in their first round of tips.

Consider the following activity:

  • Complimentary Sausage Sizzle/Gourmet BBQ
  • Free schooner for each tipping comp member redemption (as above)

Dependent on your selected activity.

TIPPING COMP NRL CUP:
DETAILS: Each venue received NRL Comp Cup in 2014, which should now be engraved with last year’s winner. This is to be either displayed in your trophy cabinet or in your sports bar where it is safe.

This cup is to be used for years to come, with yearly comp winners to have their names engraved on the trophy with the year that they won.

We encourage that venues take photos of weekly leaders holding the cup.

$50 for engraving this year’s winner.

WINNERS SHIRT:
DETAILS: Consider displaying a Winner’s T-Shirt in venue as part of your competition winner’s prize which they can wear for bragging rights at the end of the season.

TIPSTER DISCOUNT REWARDS:

  • Encourage your customers to sign up to your tipping competitions to obtain the offer.
  • Increase the visitation and length of stay of your tipping comp members across the NRL season.

Tipping Competition Members will have access to discounts in line with your Happy Hour products and prices by presenting a ‘Tipping Member’ plastic card which they will be given upon sign up and payment.

All NRL Tipping Competition Members receive discounts on house products (in line with Happy Hour products and prices) during all NRL live games. (Excluding all finals games).

Availability: During all LIVE broadcast NRL games (Excluding all finals games)

Promotional Period: The promotion is to start on Thursday 3rd March and run until end of round 26.

Processing the Sale: NRL tipping competition members must present a plastic member card issued to them at the start of the season when ordering and paying for their drinks. This has a particular barcode which can be scanned and will automatically issue a discount during NRL game times.

VENUE SUPPORT WILL ISSUE CARDS TO EACH VENUE. EACH CARD WILL HAVE A UNIQUE CODE WHICH NEEDS TO BE RECORDED ON THE TIPPING MEMBER FORM WHEN ISSUING THE CARDS.

Please note: The new tipping cards will run through our Ebet & POS systems and have greater capability than its 2015 predecessor.

COSTS:

  • POS costs, including web updates where applicable
  • Cost of the design and print of plastic member cards (quantities to reflect target number of NRL tipping competition members) $2.00
  • No costs to bar promo as promotion will see a drop in bar GP.

NRL TIPSTER SPOT REWARDS:
DETAILS: The 2016 NRL tipping cards will provide you with the capability to load vouchers for redemption on to tipping comp members’ cards.

Please keep this in mind as a tool to drive these customers to your venue on certain dates, such as traditionally quiet nights that need assistance, or larger events where you would like to throw some burley at them to ensure they come to your venue. Combined with effective SMS communication, there are opportunities available to you.

USEFUL TIPS:

  • Recommendations for POS include: A1, A3 & Nightlife teasers, A0/A1, customer till screens & trifold table talker detailed POS.

  • Please ensure all tipping comp details that have been requested are included in your proposal.

  • Communicate tipping comp T&Cs to all members and have these readily available throughout the season for those who may enquire. Transparency of all details, including total prize pool, award of prize dates etc. will ensure that all member trust in your venue’s ability to run the competition.

  • Encourage active participations from your sponsored sporting clubs. Their support will assist in the success of your competition.

  • Ensure all staff are actively involved in keeping up the chatter and banter about the competition throughout the NRL season, including how the results are tracking and any important upcoming games.

  • Ensure the details on your spreadsheet are all correct and up to date. If you have anyone who may appear to drop off with their tips submissions, give them a buzz and encourage them back to the comp.
